Radiology Residency Program FAQ

The Department of Radiology has provided answers to frequently asked questions regarding its residency program.

What type(s) of visas does your program sponsor?
We sponsor only J-1 visa. We do not substitute or accept any others. An applicant without United States citizenship must have a J-1 visa or a permanent resident card.

Do you accept International Medical Graduates (IMG's)?
Our program does accept IMG's so long as they meet the requirements set forth by our program and Institution.

Is U.S. clinical experience required for IMG's?
One year of clinical experience from an ACGME-accredited program in internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery or surgical specialties, obstetrics and gynecology, neurology, family practice, emergency medicine or any combination of these is required before beginning a residency in radiology.

Is ECFMG certification required at the time of application?
Yes.

What are the American Board of Radiology requirements?
Five years of approved training must include one year in clinical training. The first postgraduate year must be accredited clinical training in internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery or surgical specialties, obstetrics & gynecology, neurology, family practice, emergency medicine, transitional year or any combination of these. No more than a total of two months may be spent in radiology, radiation oncology and/or pathology. All clinical training must be in an ACGME-, AOA-, or RCPSC-approved program (or equivalent).

How many residents are currently in your program?
We have 22 residents in our program at this time.

How many resident positions will be offered in this year's match?
We offer five to six positions each year on a competitive basis. The required clinical year is included in our match.

Does your program consider a minimum cut-off score for USMLE exams?
Competitive passing scores for USMLE are required.

Does your program impose a limit on the graduate year for applicants?
No.

Does your program accept COMLEX scores from DO graduates in lieu of USMLE scores?
No. USMLE scores are required in addition to COMLEX scores.

What is the deadline for receiving applications?
Nov. 1.

What are the minimum requirements for admission into your program?

• Medical school transcript
• Dean's letter
• Three letters of recommendation
• Personal statement
• USMLE Step I score report
• USMLE Step II score report (if available at time of application)
• Current photo
• ECFMG certificate

All applications are accepted only through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service).

When are interviews conducted?
Interviews are conducted in the department on weekdays during the months of November, December and January. Interviewers will include the program director, faculty members and residents. Applicants will be given a tour of the department and UMMC's campus before having lunch with residents currently in the program.

When are interviews granted?
Invitations to interview will be granted by mid-November via email.
